RIP Baseball

Sad news in the world of baseball today. David Ortiz and Man Ram are said to be amongst the 100 players caught doping in 2003, according to the NY Times. Mind you this was before performance enhancers were banned, but still I'm disgusted:

Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz, the sluggers who propelled the Boston Red Sox to end an 86-year World Series championship drought and to capture another title three years later, were among the roughly 100 Major League Baseball players to test positive for performance-enhancing drugs in 2003, according to lawyers with knowledge of the results.

Some of baseball’s most cherished storylines of the past decade have been tainted by performance-enhancing drugs, including the accomplishments of record-setting home run hitters and dominating pitchers. Now, players with Boston’s championship teams of 2004 and 2007 have also been linked to doping.

The guy who played the Black Ranger on "The Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers" TV show was busted in 'Bama for DUI this weekend.We're not trying to be insensitive in a Harvard sort of way. His character, Zack Taylor, was the guy who dressed up in the black spandex costume and fought evil monsters back in the day. We're told the actor whose real name is Walter Jones was arrested around 4 A.M. Sunday morning by Troopers in Huntsville and booked into a local jail.Law enforcement sources tell us Jones was arrested without incident. He eventually met bail and was released.

Michael Vick's back!

So my close friend Michael Vick (I lied) has been reinstated:

Vick, free after serving 18 months in prison for running a dogfighting ring, was reinstated with conditions by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell yesterday. He could participate in regular-season games as early as October.

Vick can immediately take part in pre-season practices and can play in the final two pre-season games – if he can find a team that will sign him. A number of teams have already said they would not.

Emeka Okafor and Chandler swap teams:

According to numerous reports, the Charlotte Bobcats and New Orleans Hornets have agreed in principle to swap big men. Tyson Chandler is headed to Charlotte, and a previously unhappy Chris Paul gets a double-double machine in Emeka Okafor.

What’s shocking to most, is that cash-strapped New Orleans was willing to take on Okafor’s rather large contract (Emeka inked a 6-year, $72 million deal last summer). The Bobcats, meanwhile, will get some cap relief after the 2010-’11 season, when Chandler’s current deal runs out.

TP Injured :(

Unfortunate lose for the San Antonio Spurs. Starting point guard (and in my mind fastest man in the L) Tony Parker injured his leg on Friday while playing for the French national team:

Spurs guard Tony Parker suffered two injuries to his right leg in a collision with an opponent while playing for the French national team against Austria on Friday night in Strasbourg, France.

According to French sports newspaper L'Equipe, Parker left the game on a crutch after 12 minutes with a sharp pain in his right thigh after colliding with Austria's Stjepan Stazic. Though that injury soon subsided, Parker's right ankle became swollen. By Saturday morning, it was clear the ankle was the greater issue.

In a statement released by the French Basketball Federation, Parker said that the collision caused “a blow to my thigh, and my ankle also turned.”

Jay-Z will make his U.S. festival debut when he replaces the Beastie Boys at the All Points West Music & Arts Festival in New Jersey.The Grammy winner stepped in after the Beastie Boys were forced to cancel their opening night appearance July 31. The trio scrapped their current schedule because member Adam Yauch must undergo surgery and treatment for a cancerous tumor in his salivary gland.The three-day festival at Liberty State Park in Jersey City also features Tool, Coldplay and more than 65 artists.

Emma Watson, star of the Harry Potter series, has chosen her American college, and it's Ivy League. Y! reports that Emma has chosen Brown University to enroll in for this fall:

"I am going to Brown, which is an Ivy League establishment in the U.S.A. I've got a place there to read literature," she revealed to the music mag.

In recent months, the studious star made a worldwide college tour that involved many stops on the East Coast and Great Britain. But although her "Potter" co-star Daniel Radcliffe previously told Britain's Guardian newspaper that Emma was attending Brown, the actress remained mum on the subject until now.

It's days like these I wish I went to Brown.

Marc Anthony Becomes Part Owner Of Miami Dolphins

The singer is looking to make a splash as a part owner of the Miami Dolphins.

Marc joins Gloria Estefan and her husband, Emilio, as part owner of Miami’s iconic NFL franchise, "People" reported.“I’m a huge sports fan,” Marc told People. “These opportunities don’t come around too often. It’s quite an honor and a privilege to be able to sit here today saying that I’m a part owner of an NFL team.” Marc did not disclose the financial terms of his deal with Stephen Ross, the real estate mogul who owns a 95-percent stake in the Dolphins, but said there might have been a more economical way to get good seats to the games.

SUMMER LEAGUE CONTROVERSY

Guess what, even the summer league has MVP controversy. Yesterday it was released that Blake Griffin was named the MVP of the Las Vegas Summer League. You'd think that's expected because they dude had so much hype. And his stats weren't half bad, 19.2 points, 50.0 FG%, 10.8 rebounds and 0.4 blocks. But the thing is Anthony Randolph played better (26.8 points, 60.9 FG%, 8.5 rebounds and 3.0 blocks). I guess hype is too strong. (via SLAMOnline).
